Garden & Gates

The Gardens & Gates Project solves both the security and food needs for Barbuda families by installing much needed animal-proof chain-link security fences, in just one week! This project also provides employment to local Barbudan workers all for a reasonable donation cost. Hurricane Irma destroyed 90% of the fences and gates that protected family homes on Barbuda.

  • Wild horses, donkeys, giant pigs and goats are rampaging people’s yards.

    • In the months and years after the storm, people have tried to rebuild their gardens to grow food but the wild animal population has exploded and their gardens are almost immediately destroyed. There are hundreds of wild horses, donkeys and goats that come in droves, but the most dangerous threat are the aggressive pigs that break pipes and create pig sties in a matter of hours!

  • People are unable to grow much needed vegetables to feed their families.

    • In addition to the food issue, without a fence and gate, the families do not feel safe in their homes at night, and are afraid to travel off the island to work or to get much needed supplies leaving their homes unattended.

  • Providing employment and training to local Barbudan people.

    • These fencing projects not only provide much needed steady incomes for the few skilled local people on Barbuda, but will also provide training for the unskilled workers as part of BFM’s Entrepreneurship & Vocational Barbuda 180 Programs.
