Why Was This Project Selected?
In June 2021, the Brandenburg Family came on a family mission trip. One day after playing with her new friends, Layla, who is 8 years old, told us she’d discovered that there was no playground anywhere on the island, and to Layla Grace that was “simply unacceptable!” With that, she proceeded to lay out her case before us. “We’ve raised money to help Miss Sylvia and other big people with their houses, and fences but what about my friends? What about the little people, all the kids on Barbuda that have NO playground?”
We just looked at her in awe, and with a bit of conviction…
What we love about Layla Grace, is that her dream didn’t scare her; she was completely confident that God could and would help us raise all the money we needed, and HE DID!
Returning home Layla went to work raising money for a playground. Through lemonade stands, bake sales, and some promoting help from big people, aka Aunt Bonnie, Layla Grace raised the $35,000 needed to make her dream come true. It is because of her childlike faith that exactly one year later, the Layla Grace Adventure Playground stands tall in her Barbdua friend’s schoolyard.
What is the potential impact for the local community?
It is always HOPE! Hope that the God who sees, saw the community’s need for a playground, and sent an 8 year old little girl. A child who wasn’t afraid to dream too big for her new friends, who she knew had far less than her.
Project Challenges
The cost of the playground Layla envisioned for her friends could be upwards of $150,000. We knew God would have to do something miraculous and HE DID! He led BFM to Kids Around the World International. This organization refurbishes playgrounds of $150,000+ and sells them for an 8th of the cost. The other major challenge is that BFM has never erected a playground of this size, well of any size for that matter!
