  3. Kimo’s House & Baby Nursery!

A Homecoming to Remember

Kimo is more than a friend to BFM—he’s family. One of the hardest-working men on Barbuda, this young father built his own home with grit and determination. When his wife left the island to have their baby, he stayed behind, preparing for their return.

What he didn’t know was that God was preparing something even greater.

While she was away, a BFM mission team from North Carolina stepped in to transform their house—inside and out. Walls were painted, spaces were organized, and a beautiful nursery was created, filled with warmth and love.

When Chechana and baby Kalani came home, their little house had become a haven—carefully prepared, not just by human hands, but by God who sees and provides.

Why Was This Project Selected?

Kimo is a young electrician and one of the hardest working Barbudans we know. He has built his home with his own hands. Every room and especially the gallery (porch) are unfinished, because he can only build as fast as he earns extra money. Just two weeks ago, Kimo was excited to share that his wife just gave birth to their first child, Kalani Juliette.

Kimo has yet to meet his daughter as she was born on St. Thomas. His wife, Che’Chana, will be coming home to Barbuda in October. When Bonnie asked Kimo if the baby’s room was ready for her to come home, he looked down and shook his head no. Bonnie asked if she could see the inside of his home and that was the day “the God who sees” revealed BFM’s next project. The current unfinished condition of their home is how it looked when Che’Chana left to have the baby, and she has no expectations that it will be different upon her return.

Project Details

Project 1:

  • Paint kitchen, bedroom, baby nursery, and living room walls
  • Trim out and seal all windows, doors, and install thresholds
  • Set up and decorate baby nursery items, donated by Lexington Community Church, NC
  • Install curtain rods and hand-sewn curtains throughout entire home, donated by Lexington Community Church, NC
  • Paint exterior house

Project 2:

  • Help Kimo complete unfinished gallery (front and side porch)
  • Build roof above gallery
  • Build stairs to gallery
  • Build and install handrail

What are the challenges in doing this project?

The greatest challenge is trying to complete both projects before Mama and baby Kalani come home. Kimo is very excited and wants to keep this a total surprise for when they both return, which puts a real time crunch on this project unlike any other before.

What is the potential impact for the local community?

HOPE! Still after 6 years there are so many living in terrible conditions, many feel forgotten, some think their unbearable living conditions will never change. When they see Kimo’s home being completed, they see hope for themselves. This project will have a positive impact on the community because it will show the Barbudan people that God sees them! He sees their need and has sent help.
