Why Was This Project Selected?

The Kids Around The World (KATW) organization contacted BFM because they had been contacted by an organization (One Desk Foundation) that wanted to fund a playground build. Because of the success BFM had building the LGAP (Layla Grace Adventure Playground) on Barbuda, KATW remembered that Barbuda had a sister island, Antigua. When they asked Bonnie if Antigua needed or would benefit from a playground, her answer was a resounding “YES!”

Project Challenges

The challenge of doing this project was that it was on a mountain. We needed a 70’x70’ level site to build the playground, so excavation work was a must! After Mr. Pinder had the playground site ready, we thought it would be smooth sailing from there. Until the first of 50 holes (18” x 24”) had to be dug and we hit solid rock. Enter a jackhammer! We soon realized one would not be enough to finish the build on schedule. Jackhammers are NOT readily available, but God made a way for us to have three!

What is the potential impact for the local community?

We recognized the impact before the playground was ever finished as we watched the children of the community come every day to watch the build. They even respected our wishes and stayed off of it when we left in the evenings until it was safe for them to play on…now that is HUGE!

The playground was built on 6 acres of donated property located in Cooks Extension, a community in great need with one of the highest populations of children on Antigua. Joe Pinder grew up in this area and was willed this piece of land by his mother, with a promise attached; that he “Would do something good with the land that would benefit and help the community”.

News of this playground build spread across Antigua and the question has been asked over and over “Will BFM build another playground on Antigua?” The answer is, “As long as the Lord provides the funding we will do the building!”
