Why Was This Project Selected?

When Pastor Brian McCall, lead pastor of MGBC in Martinsburg, PA came to Barbuda for the first time in February 2020, he discovered there was no public Library. Since that mission trip Pastor Brian has had it in his heart to bring the world of books to all the people of Barbuda.

Project Details

Preparation:

- Collect donated books from Martinsburg Grace Brethren Church
- Organize, categorize, label and box up books
- Collect all donated furnishings for children, student and adult reading rooms
- Load a mile of library shelving, 5,000 books onto pallets, place them in shipping containers, and off to Barbuda they go!

As we pray and wait for a building:

- Cut and install ventilation in 40’ shipping container
- Build shelving in container and organize all book boxes on shelves
- Scatter moth balls to preserve books

Project Challenges

At this date September 2023, I am told by the Barbuda Council that there is no available building to restore and use for the Library. HOWEVER, I do have my sights set on an absolutely perfect building that I am praying and believing for! So until God makes this perfect building available or tells me “No not that one” and provides a different location or the funding to build a new Library building, we need and would appreciate your prayers.

What is the potential impact for the local community?

The dream for the library is multifaceted. It would provide a great place for children, students and adults to spend time reading in the designated reading areas throughout the Library, and of course check out a book to take home!

The furnishings for each of these areas are already donated and sitting in the container with those 5,000 books! For children, a Story Time area. For students, a Computer Lab and study materials for school projects. For adults, a quiet area with comfy furnishings to sit and get lost in a book.

The Barbuda Village Library will give the People of Barbuda an opportunity to see and experience the world through the written word and pictures. It will provide materials for lifelong learning and countless resources that would otherwise be difficult to find or afford.

I believe that anything we ask in accordance with God’s will, it shall be done. Jesus said, “Ask anything in My Name and I will do it.” I can say with the utmost confidence that it is NOT God’s will for that 5000 book, fully-furnished library to live in that container!
