Why Was This Project Selected?

Optometry on Barbuda is non-existent. There is NO visiting optometrist who comes to Barbuda. Most Barbudans don’t even realize how bad their eyesight is or has become. A simple pair of non-prescription reading glasses surprises them.

Donaldson is always squinting to see, and so is our dear sweet Claudette. BFM had a box of reading glasses donated recently, so we had them try on different powers until they could clearly see. This is when our eyes were opened to the great need for an Optometry Clinic!

Project Challenges

Just like the Dental Clinic, I believe the only challenge would be not being able to find Optometrists willing to come to Barbuda on mission trips and run Optical Clinics throughout the year. And I know that the Lord would never provide an Optical Clinic and not the Teams to fill it!

What is the potential impact for the local community?

An Optical Clinic for the community would provide something Barbudans have never had and be able to provide the gift of sight. It would provide eye examinations with written prescriptions to have glasses made in Antigua. We plan to have donation drives in the US to collect more non-prescription readers of every power and also previously worn prescription glasses so we can build an inventory that visiting Optometrists can pull from.
