Bonnie Floyd Ministries

The BFM Story

When Faith is Tested

In February 1, 1994, Bonnie Floyd’s life changed forever with a single phone call—her parents and two crewmates were brutally murdered while moored off the island of Barbuda.

Grief overwhelmed her, and she wondered if her shattered heart would ever heal. Yet, in the depths of tragedy, Bonnie’s faith was tested in ways she never imagined. As she walked through the darkest season of her life, she discovered a profound truth—God is faithful to all His promises.

The thought of facing one of the convicted men, Donaldson Samuel, was unimaginable—let alone leading him to Christ. But through God’s grace, that’s exactly what happened, and in an unlikely twist, he became as close as a brother.

Choosing to trust God in tragedy not only brought healing but also launched Bonnie Floyd Ministries—a life-changing mission of restoration and redemption. Now, more than 30 years later, Bonnie’s heart belongs to Barbuda, where she and her husband, Donnie, have devoted their life to its people, proving that on the other side of pain, there is purpose.

A Ministry is Born

Bonnie Floyd Ministries was officially founded in April 1996 when Bonnie began sharing her powerful testimony of love, murder, and redemption in churches and conferences across the U.S. and abroad. Over time, her speaking ministry expanded beyond her story, as she became a sought-after Bible teacher and conference speaker, traveling extensively both nationally and internationally.

For years, her husband Donnie and many others encouraged her to put her story into writing. In 2013, she published Bound to a Promise, a gripping true-life account that continues to inspire readers worldwide.

In January 2016, Bonnie and Donnie felt the Lord calling them back to where it all began—Barbuda. Unsure of His plan, they took a step of faith, leading small mission teams to serve in various ways—teaching construction skills, improving youth sports facilities, setting up a school computer lab, and ministering to families and churches.

What started as short-term missions soon became a lasting commitment. As their bond with the people of Barbuda deepened, Bonnie Floyd Ministries established a permanent presence on the island—turning personal tragedy into a mission of restoration, hope, and transformation.

Another Tragedy Strikes

On September 5, 2017, Barbuda was devastated by Hurricane Irma, a catastrophic Category 5+++ storm that left nearly every home in ruins. The island’s entire population of 1,800 was forced to evacuate, leaving behind everything they knew.

As the resilient people of Barbuda slowly returned, they found their homes unlivable. Relief organizations provided initial aid, rebuilding roofs on many standing structures, but those efforts have long since ceased. Now, seven years later, hundreds of Barbudans still endure unbearable and unhealthy living conditions—some even surviving in shredded tents.

The need remains urgent, and Bonnie Floyd Ministries is committed to restoring not just homes, but hope.

A New Mission of Restoration

In 2019, Bonnie Floyd Ministries restored its first home devastated by Hurricane Irma, and by January 2020, the BFM Mission Team Home was established—allowing larger teams to serve and accomplish even more. As the needs in Barbuda grew, so did the call to respond, leading to the launch of Barbuda 180—a movement dedicated to rebuilding lives and restoring hope.

While some homes have been “dried-in” with roofs, doors, and windows, many remain exposed to the elements. Whether dried-in or still open, most are unlivable—lacking kitchens, bathrooms, cabinets, septic systems, running water, and electricity. Yet, for families with no other options, even an incomplete home is better than none at all.

Through Barbuda 180, God’s faithfulness continues to shine.

Once again, He is bringing triumph out of tragedy.
Once again, He is proving that hope rises even in devastation.
Once again, He is making a way—just as He always does.
